Tolerance and Free Speech

Toleration, and freedom of speech and expression are important factors for individuals to flourish in a truly free society. These concepts allows us to explore, learn, and innovate in ways that challenge both ourselves and the status quo. Being tolerant and enjoying the freedom to express oneself are essential to a thriving marketplace of ideas and are instrumental to lasting freedom from oppression.

In a modern and civilized world, individuals are judged according to the content of their character, and not based on their tribal affiliations or their countries of origin. Unfortunately, xenophobia and tribalism have risen in Africa and this is largely due to a focus on collective identity rather than individualism.

Liberty in Africa, a new course from Students For Liberty, explores the menace of collectivism and how it enriches tribalism and xenophobia as well as other issues of free speech and individualism — through the expertise of great lecturers like Temba Nolutshungu, a director at the Free Market Foundation. Temba’s background is rooted in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa as one of the pioneers of the black conscious movement.

This course will help you better understand the ideas of liberty through applications of the ideas that promotes toleration and free speech.

You can also access introductions to the ideas of liberty, the basic principles of economics, and freedom of expression on SFL Academy.org.

And be on the lookout for a new and upgraded SFL Academy site to be launched next month. These courses are all coming over with us, and we’ll be adding more throughout the year — in addition to some other academic resources that will help you spread ideas on campus today!
