Former ASFL Board Member Trains Youths in Tanzania

Uhuru Leadership AcademyIsack Danford, former African Students For Liberty board member and founder of the Uhuru Initiative for Policy and Education organized a training seminar for undergraduates and young professionals in Tanzania.

The training seminar called the Uhuru Leadership Academy (ULA) brought thirty participants from across Africa and gave them training, resources, a network, and other tools with which they can effectively organize and make an impact in their universities, cities and regions.  After the event, participants of this training organize events, help start and grow student groups, and seek out other potential leaders for liberty with the resources that this young organization provides.

This is the second time UIPE is running its ULA training program whereas the first intake had 32 trainees in total from Tanzania, Zambia, Kenya, and Nigeria. For those outside Tanzania participated through an on-line option. This time around ULA program has managed to get 35 trainees all from Tanzania, who comprised of university students, recent graduates and young professionals who run their own organizations and companies.

The first day of the event covered topics like:  ‘An Introduction to Liberty’, Importance of Liberty, How Markets Work, Understanding Free Trade, Taxation and Government Spending, Property Rights, Why Governments Fail and Role of Governments. Most of these topics where extracted from the book ‘A Beginner’s Guide to Liberty’ published by the Adam Smith Institute.Faculty at ULA

The Students For Liberty Leadership Handbook provided the text for learning about leading for liberty on the second day. Participants learnt how social change happens and strategies needed to inspire change. Topics such as ‘How People and Ideas Change the World’, ‘The Importance of Having a Libertarian Community’, ‘Theory for Social Change’, ‘Strategies for Changing Minds’, ‘Theory of Empowerment and Volunteering’ and  ‘Internal and External Communication in an Organizations’ were explored.
