Share Humanity: A Classical Liberal Case for Accepting Refugees

syrian_refugees_having_rest_at_the_floor_of_keleti_railway_sFollowing over 10 years of regional instability and conflict, the world is now watching a horrifying crisis unfold in Syria and neighboring countries. Over 4 million people have fled in an attempt to escape the chaos, death, and destruction. Over 16 million are in desperate need of assistance of one kind or another.

The Syrian refugee crisis is now one of the largest humanitarian disasters the world has seen, which leaves many in the western world wondering what should be done next. Unfortunately, much of the media and political coverage surrounding these refugees has been sensationalized, which only furthers the hardship that these people have to endure.

Rather than giving into the sensational narrative that perpetuates the suffering of innocent civilians, we ought to be discussing the best way to ensure safe refuge for the millions of people who need it. There are legitimate questions and debates to be had around this issue, but working through these obstacles and concerns about our security shouldn’t prevent us from sharing our humanity. That’s the conversation that Students For Liberty is seeking to bring to college campuses this spring with our “Share Humanity” activism grant program, which we are pleased to announce today.

Share Humanity

We need your help to elevate the debate and show the world that accepting and assisting refugees is the classical liberal thing to do. The free movement of people is one of the pillars of a free society, and assisting those in need through voluntary means helps show others that we can look out for each other without the “helping hand” of big government.

Student leaders can apply for up to $250 in reimbursements for any activism related to the refugee crisis, including:

  • Organizing a clothing drive for refugee families (winter clothes, backpacks, etc.).
  • Hosting a welcome reception or dinner for refugees in your community.
  • Tabling on campus to distribute myth-busting resources.
  • Hosting an academic speaker to discuss the refugee crisis.
  • Celebrating Open Borders Day!

If you are looking to help spread the message of refugee acceptance, apply today to receive an activism grant! Here are the guidelines for how to apply and qualify for the activism grant.
