New Communications Intern: Tim Murphy

tim murphy How do you contribute to SFL in your new job role?

I support the communications team by writing blogs and finding content for social media posts.

How did you first get interested in liberty?

Most of my studies as a history major in college centered around the abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement. I noticed that, for the most part, the greatest harm to marginalized groups was a result of the state’s disregard of individual liberty. I was studying history at the same time Ron Paul was running for the GOP nomination in 2008. Everything he said about ending the prosecution of victimless crimes and avoiding war whenever possible made inherent sense to me. After college, I worked in drug policy and was exposed to the greater liberty movement.

Who do you think is the most underrated libertarian thinker?

I think a lot of African American abolitionists and civil rights leaders were essentially libertarian. Very few of them looked to government for protection. For the most part, governments served only as a means of oppression. If I had to choose one thinker: Frederick Douglass.

On a non-liberty note, what do you like to do in your free time?

I like to play tennis when I can find the time. I love rap and am a pretty decent cook. If I have the day off, I’m probably wandering around the city trying to find a new restaurant to check out.
