SFL North America: January 2016 Update

In an attempt to better share our current activities with our network, SFL is beginning an SFL Around the World blog post series. At the beginning of each month, each region will post an update to their regional blog page to share their current activities. Please stay tuned for more updates next month!

Fresh off an amazing 2015, North American leaders have returned to campus and started 2016 off with a bang.

SFL Campus Coordinator Kaytee Moyer caused quite a stir with her PennLive op-ed “Hey Baby Boomers- thanks for that $18 trillion in debt you left us.” Her article, calling out older generations for their fiscal mismanagement, was viewed by tens of thousands of people and drew in close to one thousand comments!

image03On the academic side, Campus Coordinator Jason Lee Byas had his paper “Assessing Abolition” accepted for presentation at the 2016 APEE conference. Executive Board Chairwoman Emily Rhorick received an honorable mention as a nominee for FEE’s Leonard E. Read Distinguished Alumni Award.

At Troy University, Executive Board member Jeremiah Baky decided to take on the issue of free speech by bringing back a 200 year old tradition, the soap box and megaphone!

Campus Coordinator Cory Massimino has helped launch a new virtual reading group that looks at the intersection of classical liberalism and Black Studies. image01This innovative reading group will dive deep into the abolition of slavery, the civil rights movement, black power and mass incarceration.

With below seasonal temperatures, Campus Coordinator Bela Cunningham and Executive Board Member Angel Lauver handed out hot chocolate to cold students at the University of Florida.

January has proven to be an amazing month for North American activism, and it will only get better come February!

Please view our regional blog pages for updates on SFL’s other regions.
