Celebrate Freedom Day

Looking for another way to spread the message of liberty on campus this spring? Want to take part in a national conversation on the meaning and importance of free expression? Well next Wednesday, April 13th, you’re invited to take part in Freedom Day — a day-long pro-freedom bash organized by the Philadelphia-based National Constitutional Center. Even better, the National Constitution Center is offering a $500 stipend to groups who confirm participation in advance to help defray the costs of hosting an event.

freedom dayFreedom Day encourages people of all ages to explore how Americans’ freedoms of speech and expression are exercised, threatened, and protected and Students For Liberty is excited to be a collaborating partner on this exciting project!

While SFL is now a global organization, it’s no accident we got our start in the United States with its history of libertarian political philosophy and the oldest written Constitution still in use today. It is that document (and the protections for individual liberties outlined therein) that Freedom Day celebrates. You can learn more about the event here, but there are basically two ways to get involved as a college student:

  • Host an on-campus debate about an issue related to free expression. (Download a guide from the National Constitutional Center.)
  • Host a discussion about Freedom Day, the Constitution, or the meaning of free speech. (Download a guide from the National Constitutional Center.)

Whichever you choose, you can end the day by tuning in for the National Constitutional Center’s live stream of the main event in Philly starting at 4:30 PM EST. Speakers will include the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education’s Greg Lukianoff, Editor of SPIKED Online Brendan O’Neill, and Eric Posner of the University of Chicago School of Law. Check out the full line up here and the video of last year’s events below.

As you plan your event, please RSVP Kate Maloney at [email protected] or (215) 409-6664. As you confirm your plans for an on-campus event, NCC will plot them on a map on the Freedom Day website. We’re looking forward to seeing all the creative ways you find to explore the ideas of the Constitution — and the importance of free expression — next week!
