SFL SUCCESS STORY:

Antonella S. Marty

SFL Latin America

Advancing Liberty through Public Policy and Academia in Argentina

Antonella Marty grew up in Rosario, Argentina, where the Socialist Party of Argentina maintains an electoral stronghold. In fact, since 1989, every mayor of Rosario has been a socialist. It is a testament to the power of ideas and the effectiveness of the global liberty network that Antonella is fast becoming one of the most recognizable advocates for liberty in Latin America.

“In Latin America, we have been suffering from the same problems – populism, socialism, authoritarianism, so when we were building EsLibertad, it was easy for us to start seeing each other as a family. This empathy brought us together and gave me the conviction to take the ideas to the places where people are not talking about it, and that remains one of my main professional goals.”

Antonella was the first Regional Director for Argentina and Chile in 2013 when Students for Liberty was just taking root in Latin America. She received her bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the Universidad Abierta Interamericana and her master’s degree in Public Policy from the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. She was also actively involved with one of the most active pro-liberty think tanks in Argentina, La Fundación Libertad. She also worked as an intern at the Cato Institute, The IFEF, and Cedice Libertad.

In 2014, upon learning that filmmaker Oliver Stone would give the keynote at the International Students For Liberty Conference, Antonella and her fellow leaders wrote a letter denouncing his support for authoritarian governments in Venezuela and Cuba. This letter was delivered during his keynote speech, “This is the best memory I have of my time with SFL,” Antonella says, “Oliver Stone produced a documentary claiming that socialism was good for Latin America, so he was shocked and he wasn’t expecting a group of Latin American students to challenge him. But we knew we had the right platform to challenge his support for authoritarian regimes.”

Antonella went on to become a member of the first Executive Board for Eslibertad and remains active as an alumna, advising students and attending conferences as a speaker and to network with them.

Even though she’s still in the early stages of her career, Antonella’s achievements for liberty are impressive. She currently works in the Argentinian Parliament as a public policy advisor to Senator Laura Rodríguez Machado. She is also the Director at the Center for Latin American Studies at Fundación Libertad and recently became the Associate Director at the Atlas Network’s Center for Latin America. Antonella is also a skilled researcher and author of two books The Intellectual Populist Dictatorship (2015) and What Every Socialist in the 21st Century Should Know (2018).

Antonella is a skilled researcher and communicator, working in communications for the International Foundation for Freedom, an organization chaired by the Nobel Prize-winning Mario Vargas Llosa. She is also the opinion editor for PanAm Post and regularly defends liberty in public debates broadcast on major television channels like Canal 5 Noticias.

Antonella believes that Students For Liberty was vital to helping her craft a career defending liberty in Latin America, “I started everything with SFL. I don’t know if I would have chosen the same path if I didn’t have SFL’s training and support. I helped to organize the first conference in Chile, and this was one of the first times I spoke at an event. SFL helped me find a network, and a family through all the leaders I worked with to expand EsLibertad in Argentina and beyond. The impact of SFL on my career was extraordinary.”
