6 Insider Tips for Finding a Job at LibertyCon

LibertyCon is 50 days away! It’s a great place to make connections and land that job you’ve always dreamed of. Here are some insider tips to make the most of professional opportunities at LibertyCon.

1. Bring your resume/CV

Make sure it’s up-to-date, doesn’t have any stupid fonts, is formatted nicely, and that you don’t include the email you used when you were in middle school. Think about the types of organizations you want to work for and tailor your resume or CV towards that. Print it on some nice quality paper if you have it.

2. Don’t do some weird handshake

The handshake has yet to be recognized as an Olympic sport so until that day, let’s keep our handshakes perfectly normal, that is, firm and brief. Don’t try to crush your o̶p̶p̶o̶n̶e̶n̶t̶ new acquaintance’s hand. And don’t make your hand as loose as the FBI’s interpretation of “gang.”

3. Dress for the job you want

Justice is blind, but employers are not. If you waltz in wearing the classic Hawaiian-shirt-paired-with-denim-overalls combo, don’t expect people to be asking for your resume. Most people will be wearing business casual or better at LibertyCon. Dress to impress. Add your own personal touch, and keep in mind that some photographers will be running around so this is a great opportunity to get a professional headshot. That being said, the photographer can only do so much…

4. Network

Maybe you’re an isolationist when it comes to foreign policy, but you don’t need to be an isolationist in a social situation. LibertyCon is filled with countless networking opportunities. Talk to the people you’re in line with, sitting next to, and especially those people standing behind booths acting as representatives for their organization! Just by being at the same event, you already have something in common. So strike up a conversation and see where it goes.

5. Attend the Career Fair!

The career fair is there for people who are hiring and for people looking to get hired. Serious about landing that job or internship? Prove it and go to the career fair. It takes place on the Saturday of the conference. Last year, participating organizations included the Cato Institute, the Foundation for Economic Education, and the Charles Koch Institute. Don’t forget your resume!

6. Go to the after-hours socials

Simply put, some people don’t want to hire someone who can’t hang. Oftentimes, this is the best chance to get to know someone. Friendships can lead to professional opportunities. (Students For Liberty does not condone drinking at LibertyCon unless you’re 21+)
