SFL North America: July 2016 Update
July was a great month for SFL! Here are some highlights from the past month:
The Campus Coordinator Retreat
Our new Campus Coordinators came together at Towson University in Maryland to meet, plan, and be merry! This year, we’re starting our leaders on training tracks which will prepare them for different areas in the professional world such as Marketing & Communications, Development, and Event Planning. This year’s CC class is a great group of leaders with tons of enthusiasm. It’s a privilege to work with them and we are eagerly looking forward to the start of the school year and the exciting things they’ve got planned!
SFL Canada’s No Nanny Campaign
There’s been a great push from SFL Canada in their latest campaign against the nanny state and plain packaging. We don’t need the government telling us what is best and diminishing our personal responsibility — that’s the message SFL Canada wants to get across. They have a dedicated campaign website and there have been some great memes coming out of SFL Canada. The best part? It’s all leading up to the opening of a “Nanny State Corner Store” in Toronto later this week. Stay tuned for a follow-up report!
The Day The GOP Died
SFL’s Yaël Ossowski went to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and, at an after-party, recorded “The Day The GOP Died,” a hilarious parody of Don McLean’s 1971 hit, “American Pie.” Check out the music video below!
Think Tank Created by Former SFLer
Leo Plumer, a former Senior Campus Coordinator for SFL, has started a new classical liberal think tank in Canada. Today, he is a Founding Director at the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Economic Freedom, based out of St. John’s, Canada. Plumer’s think tank is currently focusing on outreach, getting their message heard, and educating people about their market-liberal point of view. In the long term he hopes that his organization will be able to affect policy. To learn more about the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Economic Freedom, read this interview with Leo Plumer.

The iconic Gadsden Flag is under threat! A government agency recently ruled against the display the flag (and similar insignia) in workplaces. Not just from public employers, but the private sector as well. We’re for liberty, so we’re pretty big on free speech, and are not taking kindly to this threat. The Gadsden flag and principles it symbolizes are intertwined not just with the global liberty movement, but American history generally.
We at SFL have our own twist on the Gadsden: “Don’t Tread on Anyone.” So we took to social media, made people aware of this issue, and got some great responses and new variants on the classic Gadsden. We hope these will be politically correct enough for the EEOC. Even our friends at Reason noticed the big response online and posted their favorite takes on the flag!

As you can see, even when school’s out, there’s no shortage of work to be done by SFL. As the school year starts, expect to see our students stepping up to the plate to do some great things at their schools and in their regions!
