CHARTER TEAMS TRAINING
SFL’s Charter Teams program seeks to build the student movement for liberty around the world by identifying, training, and supporting the strongest student leaders of liberty in areas currently underserved by SFL. In particular, the Charter Teams Program is for students in areas not currently served by an SFL student executive board. Our focus is thus on Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Syria, Yemen.

HISTORY
SFL’s Charter Teams Program plants the seeds of liberty in regions without an existing student movement for liberty. The Charter Teams Program provides leadership training for student in regions such as Southeast Asia, East Asia, and the MENA region. The Students For Liberty networks in Latin America, Africa, and South Asia have all grown out of SFL's Charter Teams Program. Students For Liberty South East Asia, the latest success story that has been implemented through Charter Teams, was started in 2015 after several people from the region met at a libertarian conference in Bali. Since then, we have seen groups emerging in Indonesia, Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan, with highlights such as the first Asia-Pacific Conference in Indonesia in 2016, or a series of events in Hong Kong with North Korean human rights activist Yeonmi Park that drew in more than 1,000 people. We now wish to effectively use this momentum to bring the movement to Central Asia and the Middle East.
About The Program
The SFL Charter Teams Program seeks to build the student movement for liberty in South East, East and Central Asia, as well as the Middle East, by identifying, training, and supporting the strongest student leaders of liberty on college campuses. If you are not a student here, check out some of the other coordinator programs that SFL runs in our other regions. All students selected to the Charter Teams Program undergo a 2-month online training program with readings and online seminars on the philosophy of liberty and management techniques. This training will educate Charter Team members in the best practices SFL has developed over the years to effectively create a student movement for liberty in new areas. Once the online training program is completed, Charter Teams will begin to start student groups at their own schools and schools nearby, run events that educate others on the meaning of liberty, and seek to identify other pro-liberty students in their areas. Charter Teams and the individual members will achieve success in building the student movement for liberty by creating long-lasting, meaningful mechanisms of supporting pro-liberty students. Programs Associate Daniel Issing will work with all Charter Team members to develop a strategy to grow the student movement for liberty.What have our Charter Teams members accomplished?
Charter Teams members have created dozens of student groups across the country to promote liberty, and much more.- • Charter Teams members have successfully started SFL regional Executive Boards in Africa, Australia & New Zealand, Brazil, the Spanish Speaking Americas, and South Asia. The Executive Boards that followed the Charter Teams program provide sustainable leadership structures for larger investments and activities to promote liberty.
- • Estudiantes Por La Libertad Ecuador, founded by three Charter Team members, won the prestigious SFL Student Group of the Year award at the 2013 International SFL Conference in Washington, DC.
- • Charter Team members ran conferences with at least 50 students in Ecuador, Venezuela, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Nigeria.
- • Charter Team members from Nigeria went on to plan and organize the first ever SFL West African Regional Conference in July 2013. The conference drew 352 attendees.
- • In Guatemala, Armenia, Georgia and Nigeria, Charter Teams members hosted successful leadership fora with at least 12 attendees to discuss leadership in the student movement for liberty.
- •Hong Kong Students For Liberty organized a series of lectures with North Korean defector Yeonmi Park, attracting more the 1,000 people.
- • Indonesian Charter Teams Members organized the first-ever libertarian student conference in their region, with 175 attendees that came during two days of lectures and workshops.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALITIES
The Charter Teams Program is highly competitive, and designed for the top student leaders in Asia. All members of SFL’s Charter Teams Program should be current university students, about to begin their studies or be recent graduates.
Applicants interested in becoming a Charter Teams should be able to dedicate at least 5 hours per week to the program for one academic year. Successful applicants will be professional, personable, and excellent communicators.
- Be familiar with the core tenets of classical liberalism;
- Possess the ability to manage multiple projects at once;
- Looking to develop their own skillsets;
- Strong written and in-person communication;
- Be able to communicate in English fluently;
- Strong self-motivation to complete projects with little to no oversight;
- A passion for the ideas of liberty and for organizing to make the world a freer place; and
- Enjoy staying up until 2am talking to other students about how to advance liberty
