AFRICA: JUNE 2017 UPDATE

Eritrean Students For Liberty organize seminar on Liberty and Free Society.

On June 24, 2017 Eritrean Students For Liberty led by Executive Board Member, Bekit, with support from Network For a Free Society hosted a full day seminar on “Liberty & Free Society from the Eritrean Perspective.” The Seminar was held at the Tangaza University College in Nairobi, Kenya and attracted 42 participants from the Eritrean, Kenyan and the South Sudanese communities. Presentations were made on Freedom and the Role of Government, The Institution of a Free Society and Toleration by various speakers among them Teklemariam Bekit, Linda Kavuka, Andreas and Rita Mazzocchi.

 

University of Nigeria Liberty Forum

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) was host to the ASFL Campus Liberty Train on the 3rd of June, 2017 as 36 students from three universities from the south eastern region of Nigeria gathered for the one-day UNN Liberty Forum. The focus of the forum was Economic Freedom, Entrepreneurship, and Youth Participation in Governance. Topics discussed include: “Small and Medium Enterprises: Key to job creation in Nigeria” by Prince Agwu, lecturer at UNN, “Youth Participation in Governance”, Understanding Personal Freedom”, “Volunteering for liberty”, “Challenges facing entrepreneurs and need for economic freedom”, and “Liberty and the rule of Law”. Lectures were delivered by ASFL leaders, a lecturer from UNN and students leaders from UNN.

Caravan of Liberty wraps up with Youth Ambassador training.

The ASFL Kenya Caravan of Liberty was wrapped up with a 2-day Youth Ambassadors training on the 10th and 11th of June at the Hotel Emerald in Nairobi, Kenya. This project, with support from Liberal Alliance Denmark, in conjunction with the Eastern Africa Policy Center and Kenyan Manufacturing Association was focused on promoting issue-based political dialogue as opposed to identity politics which is currently predominant in the Country. The ambassadors are expected to carry on the torch of liberty in their respective counties, moving forward. After organizing campus forums in 7 select universities in 7 counties where participants were lectured on topics including rule of law, good governance, and issue based political dialogue, 30 ambassadors were chosen to participate in this training.
