SFL Around the World: May 2017

Here’s what SFL-ers around the world accomplished this May:

Charter Teams

After two bustling months, a deceptive state of calm lies over the Charter Teams Region. But underneath the surface, our leaders are busy preparing a number of major events that will sway Southeast Asia this summer. Three conferences lie ahead of us – two of them, in Korea and the Philippines – will take place in late July. The third, the long-awaited Asia-Pacific Conference is set for mid-August. The organizers are aiming for this to be the biggest libertarian gathering that the region has ever seen.

In the meantime, we have also open applications to our brand-new Charter Teams Training, which works on a rolling basis – you can apply anytime! Check out our website for more information.

Africa

SFL Africa hosted some exciting events this past month! ASFL-Nigeria in collaboration with the Student Union Government of the Oyo State College Of Agriculture and Technology organized a Liberty and Entrepreneurship Seminar which brought together over 600 attendees for discussion, learning, and even live music.

The Campus Caravan in Kenya visited Egerton University for a forum on May 6th and the Campus Liberty Train in Nigeria hit the University of Benin and Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED). Read more here!

North America

Jessica is an outspoken advocate for liberty.

May in North America means getting ready for the upcoming school year. We’ve just announced the new Executive Board for this region and you can meet the new board members here. Our North American Executive Board works with students to help them coordinate their events and activism to ensure they are as impactful as they can be.

This past month also marked the launch of the Canadian branch of the Consumer Choice Center, which featured Canadian MP Maxime Bernier and Guy Bentley of the Reason Foundation. And we hosted an “Ask Me Anything” live-stream with Campus Coordinator Jessica Murphy, who’s been speaking out against wasteful classes at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay. Read more here!

Europe

European Students For Liberty this month launched the 2017 Regional Conference season. This year, our leaders are bringing this opportunity to 18 European cities from Reykjavík to Tel Aviv!

SFL Georgia hosted their 4th ESFL conference in Batumi, which brought in over 150 attendees to discuss the role of the government in a free society, the importance of individual freedom, free market economics, and more. Other events included  a “Socialism vs. Capitalism” debate in Israel.

Finally, following the #Chechnya100 campaign, our leaders form Lithuania attended a protest against human rights and violations in Chechnya. Read more here!

Brazil

In Brazil, we’ve spent May looking forward to launch our main event, the LibertyCon Brazil 2017. The conference brand expands the concept of a complex São Paulo to an industrious Brazil, showcasing buildings from around the country. The 50 sessions will be divided between different thematic tracks, where participants will be able to personalize their experience in accordance with their preferences.

Moreover, May was a month to be remembered throughout history in Brazilian politics. Our president, Michel Temer, was caught on tape green-lighting bribes by one of the most powerful “friends of the crown,” the businessman Joesley Batista, owner of JBS – the world’s leading meat company. Students For Liberty Brazil posted, on the night the scandal broke, a photo showing four corrupted politicians – including the president – with “do not have a pet politician” written through their faces. It reached 8 million people on Facebook, with 97,045 shares and 20,000 likes.
