The 3 LibertyCon Debates

One of the greatest things about freedom of speech is that it allows views to be challenged and provides the foundation for any honest discussion. Anybody who has spent time in the “liberty movement” can tell you that the individuals who make up this movement are far from being in agreement on every issue. We want to facilitate productive and sane conversations on some of the hottest issues facing liberty lovers and that’s why we’re hosting three debates at this year’s LibertyCon!

The Capitalism vs. Socialism Debate

Economist Bryan Caplan will stand up for capitalism in this debate with Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges, who will provide the socialist view. Many view capitalism as an essential component of the liberal democratic system which provides the base for a great number of countries today. Others view socialism as a way to lessen oppression. No matter which side you’re on, this debate will bring together two bright and accomplished individuals who have arrived at very different conclusions. Read more about this debate here.

The Immigration Debate

Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute who consistently stands up for the rights of immigrants will debate Philip Haney, a founding member of the Department of Homeland Security and who has made media appearances discussing immigration and national security policy. While immigration has always been an issue in the American consciousness, it perennially becomes more and more agitated as an oftentimes emotional and divisive topic. The migrant crisis in Europe and the 2016 election were the two recent catalysts for once more bringing this topic to the front lines. This debate could get bumpy, so strap in. You can read more about it here.

The Cryptocurrency Debate

Financial expert Peter Schiff, a noted cryptocurrency skeptic, will face off with Sterlin Lujan, Communications Advisor for Bitcoin.com. Following the media attention Bitcoin received during its meteoric rise in 2017, there’s never been a time when cryptocurrency has been more well-known. Some people see it as a store of value, some as a way of fighting back against central banks, and still others see it as more similar to gambling than investing. This debate is sure to be a highlight and you can read more about it here.

When you bring together so many liberty lovers, there will be no shortage of debates among the attendees. Only these three debates will be featured on stage though and there is no doubt that they will be some of the most talked-about events in the LibertyCon program. You don’t want to miss out.
